Tony Maida predicted that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services may adopt a shorter look-back period in its new rule for providers to return Medicare overpayments, noting input the agency received on the rule “was essentially to choose between a four-year period and a six-year period, and that was something that CMS was seriously considering.” Also, Edward Zacharias said he has been told by regulators that “a new era of HIPAA enforcement” is coming and that “the honeymoon is over” for companies that mishandle protected health information.
