Impacts of Marriage Equality on Benefits and HR Policies

Todd Solomon said that companies are “wrestling” with whether to drop benefits for unmarried same-sex partners, given that LGBT people now have marriage rights in every state. He noted that although some employers have already announced they will eliminate benefits options for unmarried same-sex partners in the near future, there also are arguments for keeping these available. On another issue, Mr. Solomon added that employers are now “very relieved” to be freed from the complexities of taxing same-sex spouse benefits.
