Mark Selinger discussed how he recently helped a high net worth family structure complex investments directly into private companies. Such families either make investments similar to the industries in which the family made their fortunes or the exact opposites, Mr. Selinger said, with the goal of circumventing private equity firms by seeking targets after the venture stage but well before a public offering or sale, when the companies are just beginning to generate revenue so there is far less competition for deals.
