Laura Gavioli, commenting on reports that the National Archives may release IRS documents among those relating to President Kennedy’s assassination, said Tax Code Section 6103 “does not really allow for disclosure of taxpayer records to the general public under the rationale that disclosure is in the public interest.” She added that although 6103 protections last after a taxpayer has died, “it’s possible that the IRS records that are intended for disclosure do not involve ‘return information’ under the statute.”
