Joanne Ludovici, as an American Heart Association CPR volunteer, noted in this televised interview that only one-third of cardiac arrest victims are helped by a bystander, often because others don’t know how to react. “Usually a cardiac arrest happens when you come upon someone who is not breathing or not breathing properly and you know they need help,” Ms. Ludovici said. “When that happens, do two things. First, call 911. Then simply push hard and fast on the center of that person’s chest.”
