Mark Pearlstein, interviewed before the death sentence verdict on Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was announced, called the jury’s speed in reaching a verdict “a bit surprising” because the long jury verdict form had “lots of issues for the jury to work through … Even in a fairly straightforward case the number of decisions would take a longer deliberation.” Although the jury “has been thinking about this since the first day of the trial,” Mr. Pearlstein added, “nonetheless I would have expected that this deliberation would spill into” a following week.”
