McDermott Adds Top Litigator to Washington Trial Group

Overview

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 8, 2015) — International law firm McDermott Will & Emery announced today that Will F. Stute has joined the Firm’s Trial Practice Group in Washington, D.C. With a deep background in successfully handling complex litigation, his practice focuses on matters involving commercial fraud, shareholder derivative and class actions, multi-district and business litigation.

Stute has been successful for clients on a number of high-stakes matters. He recently represented material institutional investors victimized in several of the largest Ponzi schemes in U.S. history, securing the return of tens of millions of dollars for his clients. He also successfully represented a major food producer in fighting highly publicized class action claims that it had fraudulently mislabeled products, obtaining an early dismissal of the claims, with industry-wide implications for food manufacturers.

“Will is going to be a tremendous asset to our team in Washington and nationwide,” said Lazar P. Raynal, Firm-wide head of McDermott’s Trial Practice Group. “He has enormous energy and his experience in complex financial litigation broadens the range of services we are able to offer to our clients. He’s a natural fit for the team.”

In addition to maintaining his robust practice, Stute remains highly involved in the community. A lifelong advocate for greater workplace diversity and inclusion, he previously served as president of Twin Cities Diversity in Practice, a consortium of leading law firms and corporate legal departments seeking to increase diversity in the legal community. In addition, he serves on the Board of Trustees for William Mitchell College of Law, where he earned his J.D., cum laude, in 1997.

Stute’s arrival aligns with McDermott’s increased emphasis on recruiting top talent across U.S. and international markets. Lateral hiring at the Firm has been on the rise in recent months, particularly in Washington, which has hired several high-profile partners, including former U.S. Representative Jim Moran and Private Client partner Leigh-Alexandra Basha.

McDermott’s Trial Practice Group delivers full litigation service from resident trial partners and associates throughout its U.S. offices. It is regularly engaged in all aspects of civil, regulatory and white-collar criminal defense litigation in U.S. and international forums. McDermott’s Trial Practice Group includes several members of the American College of Trial Lawyers, former Assistant U.S. Attorneys and Department of Justice lawyers, as well as former members of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of the Treasury, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Department of Commerce. More than 50 McDermott lawyers have previously served as judicial law clerks.
