“The “War on Cancer” promised in a proposed new 10-year cancer strategy unveiled this morning by the Secretary of State for Health is very welcome, particularly in the context of growing waiting lists and undiagnosed conditions in the UK during the pandemic. An evidence-based 10 year ‘Cancer Plan’ could help to better co-ordinate cancer care and help to tackle the cancer backlog, give focus to cancer prevention, and improve access for patients and early diagnosis. Furthermore, the long-term nature of the plan may encourage investment in new and innovative treatments, including enhanced use of personalized medicine and new surgical, radiotherapy and chemotherapy techniques. With suitable levels of resourcing and funding, and in tandem with the promise of new local diagnostic hubs, a comprehensive cancer plan should be a cause for great optimism.
