McDermott Expands Global Energy Capabilities with Prominent Appointment in London

Overview

McDermott Will & Emery today announced the appointment of Merrick White as a partner in London. Merrick brings nearly three decades of experience advising Oil & Gas clients on the legal, commercial, business development and engineering aspects of the Resources and LNG industries, particularly in Asia and Africa. His arrival follows on the heels of the recent hire of another Energy & Infrastructure heavyweight, Ignatius Hwang.

“Merrick is a seasoned and versatile adviser across a broad spectrum of energy-related projects. His stellar industry experience and reputation in the market will provide a further boost to our expanding global Energy & Infrastructure practice, offering our clients trusted advice on their inbound and outbound investments across the world, particularly in Southeast Asia,” said Michael Poulos, Partner and Head of Strategy. “Our clients will also benefit from valuable synergies between his practice and our global litigation and finance capabilities, with McDermott as a single source for complex business needs.”

Merrick specialises in global oil, gas, LNG, refining and petrochemical project development. He advises clients on all aspects of energy-related development projects and transactions, from the granting of upstream concession agreements to the acquisition and disposal of energy assets; the development of refineries, and transportation infrastructure; and the sale of oil, gas, LNG and petrochemical products.

“This appointment advances our investments in London, Southeast Asia and important global markets,” said Hamid Yunis, London Managing Partner. “Clients are increasing relying on us for energy-related counsel and Merrick’s extensive background will help address both this growing demand and our broader international M&A and project development advice.”

In addition to his legal qualifications, Merrick is a Chartered Chemical Engineer. He spent over 23 years in Asia successfully developing major infrastructure projects, and 13 years in engineering and commercial roles with British Gas Exploration & Production, Gulf Indonesia and ConocoPhillips.

Merrick commented, “McDermott is well known for its world-class Energy & Infrastructure practice with its strong international focus and its collegiate culture across the Firm. I am delighted to offer my clients the added-value of this vibrant team and to support them in their business ventures in Southeast Asia and globally.”

Since 2012, Merrick has been recommended as a Leading Lawyer in Chambers Global for Project work, and from 2008 for Oil and Gas, where he is ranked Band 1. He was also recognized by Chambers Global in 2019, as well as by Chambers Asia-Pacific in 2019, for his work across the oil, gas and LNG industries.
