McDermott Named Top Five Life Sciences Law Firm

Overview

NEW YORK (January 11, 2016) — McDermott Will Emery has been named one of the nation’s top five law firms “most active and relevant for life science companies” in the inaugural Life Sciences Law Firm Index sponsored by Lake Whillans in collaboration with Breaking Media, the publisher of MedCity News and Above the Law.

The Life Sciences Law Firm Index recognizes the “vital role legal practitioners play in guiding a product through this enormously complex legal and regulatory environment . . . For biotech, pharma and healthcare entrepreneurs, finding the right legal partner who both understands the challenges unique to their space and can be a partner from inception through clinical trials and product launch can be difficult.”

The Index was created and launched with the goal of informing innovators, investors and players in the life sciences sector “which firms are the leaders in the multi-faceted interplay between the legal market and the industry.” The Index notes that “Life sciences innovators rely on strong legal counsel to protect their interest at every stage of the product life cycle.”

“It is enormously gratifying to be recognized as one of the leading law firms helping to guide life science companies and investors in the sector through the many transactional, regulatory, intellectual property and litigation challenges in the marketplace,” said McDermott partner Byron S. Kalogerou, Chair of the Firm’s Life Science Industry Group. “From emerging companies to global powerhouses, our team of highly experienced attorneys helps our clients overcome these challenges and achieve their goals.”

McDermott was specifically recognized in the Index for its innovative “Life Sciences Entrepreneurs Acceleration Program” (LEAP), launched in 2013 to assist early-stage life sciences companies in securing strategic legal advice at their critical early stages using creative milestone-based fee arrangements.

In a record-breaking year of transactional activity in life sciences, many of the world’s leading life science companies turned to the Firm for counsel on complex, cross-border M&A and licensing and collaboration deals.

The Index was compiled by collecting data in three practice categories: corporate, intellectual property and regulatory. Ranking scores also took into consideration information on the firms’ work with startup companies, as well as their initiatives in thought leadership.

McDermott’s Life Science Industry Group includes 135 professionals, 60 with advanced science degrees and many others with government and industry experience, working across 19 offices around the world. With insights drawn from the only health practice ranked Tier 1 nationally by Chambers USA, we deliver integrated business solutions to our clients, bringing the required experience from our leading tax, health, intellectual property, antitrust and regulatory practices to solve our clients’ challenges.
