McDermott Recommended in the Global Arbitration Review 100 2017 for Fifth Consecutive Year

Overview

LONDON (April 19, 2017) – McDermott Will & Emery continues to be recognized by the Global Arbitration Review in the GAR 100 2017, a guide to the international arbitration capabilities of law firms. McDermott has been included in the GAR 100 list for the past five consecutive years.

Law firms and lawyers selected for the list are evaluated on their reputation, amount of work undertaken and experience, and are recommended as “approved” in international arbitration discipline. McDermott is among the elite list of firms recommended for know-how and credibility in the international arbitration arena.

This year’s GAR editorial covers the history of the practice and in particular highlights several of the Firm’s international arbitration successes including, work for the German government in a high-profile ICSID case (reportedly worth €4.7 billion), brought by Sweden’s Vattenfall over a decision to hasten the phase-out of nuclear energy; the Bionol Clearfield US$230 million award win against Getty Petroleum Marketing in a dispute over an ethanol plant in Pennsylvania; successful enforcement of two SIAC awards before the courts in Wuxi, China; Canadian dairy company Aliments Ultima favourable settlement with its French franchisor, ending the ICC arbitration between the parties; and at ICSID, a win of US$25 million awarded to a Swedish oil company Lundin against Tunisia in 2015 in a dispute over tax.

McDermott lawyers recommended in the editorial are Jacob Grierson (France), Sabine Konrad (Germany) and Lisa Richman (USA).

Some positive client comments on the team’s work include:

  • Esa Kekkonen, counsel at Finnish forest industry company Metsä Group, says the team’s desire to “understand the business case thoroughly” was critical to achieving success in the case settlement.
  • Kevin Norman of German chemicals group Evonik Degussa says that McDermott lawyers managed to negotiate a settlement on the eve of arbitration that made his business “extremely happy”.
  • Another client describes Sabine Konrad and the group as a whole as “professional, team-oriented and efficient. Their legal advice is absolutely cutting edge.”

ABOUT GAR 100
The GAR 100, which is in its 10th edition, is a guide to the international arbitration capabilities of law firms and also assists clients in finding the specialist counsel they seek. The 100 includes practices of all size from all parts of the world, all audited by GAR. It’s grown beyond the original 100 firms: there are 163 firms listed in the tenth edition – and a subsection on the most active expert witness providers. GAR is one of the leading publications for private and public arbitration. Firms are selected for the GAR 100 list based on the number of merit hearings a firm has participated in, the number of lawyers rated highly enough to be listed in the “Who’s Who” lists, among other criteria.
