McDermott Strengthens its German Practice with New Partner Appointment

Overview

FRANKFURTMcDermott Will & Emery further expands its German practice with the addition of Wilhelm Haarmann as partner in the Firm’s Frankfurt office. Wilhelm Haarmann, who joined the Firm on 2 January, will act at the interface of tax and corporate law as well as in M&A, boardroom matters and arbitration matters.

Wilhelm focuses his practice on international tax matters and corporate law, drawing on his triple qualification as a lawyer, tax consultant (Steuerberater) and certified public accountant. He is seasoned in company law matters, having been involved in major transactions and corporate governance questions as a member of supervisory boards. For 30 years, up to May 2018, he was a member of the supervisory board of SAP SE, the largest software company in Europe and the company with the highest market cap in Germany. He was the chairman of the finance and investment committee for many years.

“With Wilhelm Haarmann, we gain one of Germany’s best-known lawyers for our practice,” said Norbert Schulte, head of McDermott in Germany. “We have a number of promising overlaps in client relationships and we are looking forward to joining forces in developing our business further.”

Wilhelm advises on tax and company law (including governance issues), as well as on corporate transactions (including major mergers and acquisitions), and he is active as an arbitrator in arbitration proceedings. Wilhelm represents clients in all courts, including before German tax tribunals (Finanzgericht and Bundesfinanzhof) and the European Court of Justice, on tax-related disputes.

Dirk Pohl, head of McDermott’s German tax practice, added: “Wilhelm Haarmann has an outstanding reputation in German and international tax law. His move perfectly complements our strategy of expanding our business in Germany whilst drawing on the strengths of our highly noted US tax practice. We have known each other for many years, and I am excited that Wilhelm has agreed to take on another new challenge. Our German practice, and our young tax partners in particular, will benefit greatly from his wealth of experience.”

Before joining McDermott, Wilhelm was a partner in a magic circle firm and prior to this he set up and practiced at law firms founded by him and carrying his name and before that he was working for two major accountancy firms.
