McDermott Will & Emery’s Washington, DC Office Wins “Champions for Children” Award

Overview

WASHINGTON, DC (March 4, 2015) —McDermott Will & Emery’s Washington, DC office has been named by Children’s Law Center as a Champion for Children, in recognition of its support of the District’s most vulnerable youth.

The Champions for Children award recognizes the generosity of law firms whose total 2014 annual giving to Children’s Law Center exceeded that of their peers. McDermott’s DC office donated almost $40,000 in 2014 to Children’s Law Center, which provides free legal services for at-risk children who face abuse and neglect, need loving homes, or have special education and health needs. Through McDermott’s generosity, many more at-risk children in DC will have a top-notch lawyer to secure safe housing, special education services and safe, permanent families.

“I am pleased to recognize McDermott Will & Emery as a Children’s Law Center Champion for Children. The firm and its employees donated more than any other comparably sized firm in the past year, and those dollars will ensure that many at-risk children can grow up with a quality education, loving homes, and good health. Their commitment to DC’s kids has been profound for years: they were our very first pro bono partner to tackle special education cases, and because of them, thousands of DC children are now learning in school,” said Judith Sandalow, Executive Director of Children’s Law Center.

Children’s Law Center, founded in 1996, helps DC’s most vulnerable children overcome challenges that can get in the way of their most basic needs: a quality education, good health, and a permanent, loving home. The organization reaches 1 out of every 8 children in DC’s poorest neighborhoods – more than 5,000 children and families each year.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to support Children’s Law Center in its mission to improve the lives of so many children throughout the city,” said Paul Thompson, Partner-in-Charge of McDermott’s DC office. “McDermott’s DC office is proud to uphold the Firm’s long-standing commitment and dedication to helping those in need, and we look forward to continuing the tradition of giving-back to our local community in 2015 and beyond.”

The award, which will be accepted by Mr. Thompson, also recognizes McDermott partner Guy Collier, who serves as Co-Chair of the Children’s Law Center’s Emeritus Board; partner Hillary Webber, who serves on the Advisory Board; and partner Alison Nadel, a dedicated supporter of Children’s Law Center who has personally handled a number of pro bono matters with the organization.
