October 18, 2017 – McDermott is pleased to announce that Michael P. Chu has been recognized with the Laura C. Liu Lifetime Achievement Award by the Chinese American Bar Association. Michael was selected for having displayed “a lifetime of exemplary service to the community and organization.”
Michael currently serves as co-chair of McDermott’s Racial & Ethnic Diversity Committee and is the board chair for Asian Americans Advancing Justice and the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms. He previously served as president of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association as well as president of the NAPABA Law Foundation.
Michael focuses his practice on all aspects of patent law relating to mechanical, digital electronics and electro-mechanical arts, including litigation, opinions and prosecution. He handles patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright matters, including trial hearings, post-grant proceedings (including IPRs and PGRs) and mediation. His experience also includes complex patent cases, design patent cases, and International Trade Commission investigations. Michael has a strong appellate practice before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and extensive experience working with clients on litigation, licensing, regulation and import/export issues in Asia and Europe.
Earlier this year, Michael was recognized with the 2017 Trailblazer Award by the Filipino American Lawyers Association of Chicago. The Trailblazer Award is presented each year to a “Filipino American attorney whose demonstrated vision, leadership, and tenacity has helped him make his name in the legal industry, thereby paving the way for others to travel.”
On October 12, McDermott hosted the Chinese American Bar Association’s 2017 Installation and Awards Reception at its new office in Chicago. Michael was presented with the Laura C. Liu Lifetime Achievement Award at the reception.
