NCAA Ruling Clears Path For More Antitrust, Labor Brawls

Overview

Joel Chefitz said if a federal court ruling that the NCAA’s ban on paying elite college athletes broke antitrust laws, “we are going to see plenty of litigation before this all sorts out … and we’ll see antitrust and labor cases going hand in hand.” Mr. Chefitz contended that because the court’s ruling “reads more like an agency regulation than a judicial opinion,” the proposed remedy of paying athletes a $5,000 licensing fee will likely be “a major issue on appeal” – although he added that the NCAA may regard it “as a relatively painless remedy” and not appeal.
