David Ransom told the National Conference of State Legislatures that a new wave of stolen identity and tax refund fraud has emerged. “We’re not talking about refund fraud where Dave or Patrick . . . are stretching charitable contributions,” Mr. Ransom said. “We’re talking about organized gangs and schemes where hundreds [of] thousands of fraudulent stolen returns with stolen identities are pushed through a system.” To combat this he noted a new public/private sector information sharing and analysis platform.
