Tony Maida said that the concept of an Office of Inspector General litigation team focused on Medicare and Medicaid fraud had long been considered but was stymied by budget issues that have recently subsided. Such a team, he noted, will let OIG lawyers focus on combating fraud rather than being diverted to other work. When he was an OIG enforcement official, Mr. Maida added, “We said that the only way we’re going to be able to bring more cases is if this is 100 percent of their job.”
