Emily Cook said that whether hospitals are reclassified as urban or rural by CMS for next year’s reimbursements “can be quite significant,” noting that while “the overall impact depends on the volume of services at the hospital, … it would not be unusual to see an impact in the millions of dollars.” A client alert by McDermott+Consulting suggested that “physicians and entities that are currently involved in arrangements that involve a Stark Law exception dependent on rural location should review the list of redesignated areas in the proposed rule to evaluate the potential effects of the changes to such arrangements.”
