Joanne Ludovici advised that “companies need to file for protection now” to protect their names and trademarks before trade restrictions with Cuba ease. “We’re going to see brand battles” over the next five years, Ms. Ludovici continued, so now is a good time for businesses to ensure their brands are fully protected in both Cuba and the U.S. – particularly since brand owners and importers of Cuban goods will likely increase their trademark application filings. “There is going to be a jockeying for position at the PTO,” Ms. Ludovici concluded.
