Prosecutors Assailed for Broad Asks

Overview

Stephen Ryan characterized a Washington, DC federal magistrate judge’s refusal to sign a search warrant application covering email in an investigation of alleged government contract kickbacks as a “classic” message to prosecutors. “He told the government to stop doing overbroad searches – even told them how to make their searches comport with his reading of the Constitution” regarding privacy, Mr. Ryan said. Noting previous warnings from the same judge, Mr. Ryan concluded that “the prosecutors failed to heed his advice.”
