International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is proud to announce the appointment of Robert Cordy to the newly formed Ethics Council of Ukraine. The group is composed of six members charged with reviewing the integrity of the current members, and applicants for appointment to, Ukraine’s highest judicial governance body, the High Council of Justice.
President Zelenskyy announced the establishment of the Ethics Council in June 2021 as part of a Judicial Reform Strategy that was enacted to create a restarted legal system after several accusations of corruption among judges. Robert joins the board of three international legal experts including Sir Anthony Hooper, a retired UK Court of Appeals judge, Lavly Perling, a former Prosecutor General from Estonia, and three Ukrainian judges—Lev Kyshakevych, Yuriy Tryasun and Volodymyr Siverin.
Robert’s practice includes business litigation, white collar criminal defense, internal investigations, appellate work and major public/private projects. Robert previously served for 16 years as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He has worked with judges from Mexico, Russia, China, Kosovo, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Afghanistan and other countries on issues relating to judicial ethics, rule of law principles and the American judicial system. Robert also served as chair of the Supreme Judicial Court Rules Committee, co-chair of the Supreme Judicial Court Judiciary-Media Committee and member of the Committee for Capital Planning for the Judicial System.
