Robert Goldstein said the push by private equity firms to pursue smaller company targets shows that keen competition for deals is driving players away from the most heated sectors and transactions. “Private-equity professionals are among the smartest and best investors out there,” Mr. Goldstein noted. “So if they don’t see opportunities in traditional deals at prices that are reasonable or the environment is too competitive, they are going to expand their investment targets to different markets and different industries.”
