Peter Faber commented that in the early 1980s, the field of state and local taxation (SALT) was “kind of a small town. There was a time when SALT work involved a lot of sitting down and schmoozing with the auditors. It was not regarded as an intellectual field the way federal tax was.” At that time, Mr. Faber added, SALT practitioners typically “did not read cases, they did not do the kind of extensive research that we do today.”
