Arthur Rosen called it “really shocking” that telecom companies are more heavily taxed than most businesses, reflecting the fact that many state laws still treat telecoms as regulated landline monopolies. Noting that the taxes are often levied on consumers but the telecoms must collect and remit them to tax authorities, Mr. Rosen added, “Once the company has lost the opportunity to collect the tax from the consumer, the company as a practical matter is going to have to pay out of its own pockets.”
