Sarah Chapin Columbia, head of McDermott’s IP practice, noted that it’s hard for law firms to represent both technology companies and so-called patent trolls. When most high-tech clients come to McDermott, she explained, “One of the first questions they ask is if we represent patent trolls” (the Firm does not). Ms. Columbia continued that new laws aimed at trolls have led to less patent litigation, while McDermott’s patent prosecution work is up – “the overall amount of work hasn’t changed, just more where we’re doing it,” she concluded.
