Paul Thompson, who has worked with gay rights advocacy group the Mattachine Society as part of McDermott’s pro bono support for the group’s effort to uncover documentation of past anti-gay government policies, said that he was surprised that the documents showed how stark the government’s language against gays was for so long. “And we’re just now struggling with whether there’s a need to protect people in the workplace,” Mr. Thompson noted.
