Amandeep Sidhu, who has worked with the Sikh Coalition to secure opportunities for religiously observant Sikhs to serve in the U.S. Military, said the three Sikhs currently serving have shown they could appear neat and conservative in uniform and safely wear helmets and gas masks even with long hair and beards. However, he added, “for all intents and purposes,” a Sikh still “can’t show up at basic training without shaving his beard, cutting his hair and taking off his turban, in violation of his religion.” Read the full article
