Thomas Sauermilch warned industrial company executives that “criminal sanctions are a real risk” for environmental or safety disasters. Mr. Sauermilch urged close review of compliance efforts at acquired companies. “You can’t possibly have an effective enough safety program if you don’t allocate sufficient resources to it,” he said. “Ensure that compliance and safety really works.” Daphne Trotter seconded the need for ongoing safety and environmental compliance examination. “As a general counsel you’d want to have interaction with your leads in those programs to understand what’s going on there,” Ms. Trotter said.
