Todd Solomon discussed the “unintended consequences” on domestic partner benefits from the Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling upholding same-sex marriage rights, noting that “with no legal barriers to same-sex marriage, it’s likely that some employers will eliminate their benefits for unmarried partners, which are complex administratively due to tax and other reasons.” He added such employers could provide a grace period to allow same-sex couples to marry.
