Richard Y. Kim represents companies on trademark prosecution, counseling, licensing and litigation matters. He has been praised in World Trademark Review (WTR) as being “highly efficient and knowledgeable” and “very responsive in prosecution matters.” He assists clients with all stages of securing US trademark protection and coordinates the filing and prosecution of US and international trademark applications.
In particular, Richard has extensive experience in managing large US and global trademark portfolios in the consumer products, technology, scientific, food and beverage, health and entertainment fields, and working with clients in formulating US and non-US filing, protection and enforcement strategies. Richard advises on selection, clearance and adoption of new trademarks, renders opinions on the availability and proper use of trademarks and practices extensively before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including in opposition and cancellation proceedings and ex parte appeals from final decisions of the USPTO.
Prior to joining the Firm, Richard was an examining attorney with the USPTO, where he rendered agency decisions on statutory and procedural issues concerning US trademark applications. He also argued numerous successful ex parte appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and served as an instructor for the new examining attorney training program. “The ex-USPTO examining attorney now brings an insider’s perspective to non-contentious mandates and has been praised for having ’a strong business sense,’” according to WTR.
