Overview
David G. Schäfer focuses his practice on advising vehicle manufacturers and their import companies, start-ups and car subscription providers on cross-border projects in the mobility sector at the interface between financing law and distribution systems in markets within and outside of Europe.
David and McDermott’s Automotive Finance team advise, inter alia, on the structuring and negotiation of cooperation models for dealer and/or customer financing at retail and wholesale level, the setup of captive models and regulatory permission applications, the structuring of cross-border factoring models as well as advice on and optimization of sales financing models under tax, data protection and trademark law.
David studied law at the University of Heidelberg, University of Münster and the University of Ottawa. As a legal trainee he worked inter alia for the German embassy in Washington, DC and the finance and litigation/arbitration teams of international law firms in Cologne and Düsseldorf.

- a car manufacturer on its wholesale financing model in various European markets (including Germany, France and Italy)
- a car manufacturer on the structuring and implementation of retail financing cooperations in a variety of markets within and outside Europe
- a car manufacturer on factoring models for the Belgian, Dutch and Spanish markets, among others
- a captive bank on legal aspects of its product offering as well as on financing cooperations in several European markets
