London (September 6, 2017) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Ashley Winton has joined the Firm’s London office as a partner in its Global Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice.

An expert in global cybersecurity and data privacy law, Ashley is a specialist in data protection and privacy, information governance and cybersecurity compliance. He has particularly in-depth knowledge of cyber breach response, cyber security in the context of payment systems, the lawful interception of data, and the conflict of laws in relation to corporate and government investigations and international litigation. Ashley frequently represents major corporations, trade associations, charities and government entities on a range of data privacy issues and he has significant experience in advising on the impact of privacy and cyber security law on cloud services, telecommunications and international data transfers.

“We are delighted to welcome Ashley to the firm,” said Andrew Vergunst, head of McDermott’s London office. “We have been rapidly growing our European privacy and cybersecurity capabilities, and Ashley’s arrival follows the recent addition of partner Romain Perray to our team in Paris. Ashley’s extensive industry knowledge and experience will greatly enhance McDermott’s cross-border capabilities and place us at the very forefront of the market internationally, particularly in light of the new General Data Protection Regulation, NIS Directive and Payment Services Directive 2”

Michael Morgan, leader of McDermott’s Global Privacy and Cybersecurity practice added, “Ashley brings with him an incredibly broad and in-depth range of experience from across the cybersecurity and data privacy fields and we are extremely excited to have him on-board. The addition of Ashley to our team in Europe reflects our strong commitment to our wide, global offering that McDermott provides to clients in this fast moving, industry-critical space. I and my colleagues across the firm are very much looking forward to working with Ashley on the challenging privacy and cybersecurity issues facing companies in Europe, the US, and around the world.”

Ashley has extensive experience in advising banks and financial institutions, FinTech companies, technology providers and the online behavioural advertising industry in Europe, in particular advising clients on their dealings with the European Commission, the Article 29 Working Party, the European Parliament and various national governments and regulators. Formerly a computer designer, he is a fellow of the Ponemon Institute, and current Chairman of the UK Data Protection Forum, the leading data protection association in the UK. He is a member of both the British Computer Society and the Institute of Electrical Engineering. Since 2001 he has been recognised annually as a leading practitioner in his field across both Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500.
