McDermott’s Eric Zimmerman Elected President-Elect Designate of American Health Lawyers Association

Overview

WASHINGTON, DC (April 28, 2015) – McDermott Health Industry Advisory partner Eric Zimmerman has been elected as President-Elect Designate of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA).

The American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) is the nation’s largest nonpartisan educational organization devoted to legal issues in the health care field. The Association’s more than 13,000 members practice in a variety of settings in the health care legal community. As AHLA President, Eric will play a key role in guiding the Association’s programming and educational efforts, among other things, when his term begins in July 2017. Working with the AHLA Board and its members, Eric will focus on achieving the Association’s vision: “to lead health law to excellence.”

In addition to Mr. Zimmerman’s role as a partner of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, he serves as a principal of McDermott+Consulting LLC, a subsidiary consulting firm that focuses on health policy, lobbying and analytics. Eric is a recognized Medicare law and policy authority who represents clients before Congress, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other federal agencies. He regularly helps clients navigate federal legislative and regulatory processes related to Medicare coverage, coding, reimbursement and compliance. Eric counsels and represents hospitals and health systems, ambulatory surgery centers, clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and device manufacturers and suppliers, medical trade associations and professional societies.

McDermott and its lawyers have a long history of involvement with and support of the AHLA going back decades. The Firm has had the honor of having among its lawyers or alumni two past Presidents of AHLA with Eric now becoming the third McDermott partner to serve in this important role. Three of McDermott’s lawyers have received the Association’s David J. Greenburg Service Award, and eight of McDermott’s lawyers or alumni are AHLA Fellows, which recognizes lifelong leaders of AHLA. Other McDermott lawyers serve on numerous AHLA committees, are regular speakers at Association conferences, and contribute numerous original articles and commentary to AHLA publications.

“Eric is an outstanding choice to lead AHLA,” said Stephen W. Bernstein, partner and head of McDermott’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group. “During this period of historic change in health care policy and delivery, AHLA members look to the organization as an important resource for information and insights. Eric’s experience navigating so many of the legal and policy challenges facing the health care industry and its many constituents will be of great value to AHLA as it works to meet the needs of its members. And, it is consistent with the McDermott Health Practice’s long-standing support of and leadership within AHLA.”

“Eric is an exceptional leader, and AHLA is thrilled that he will continue to volunteer his valuable time as an officer of the Association,” said AHLA CEO David S. Cade. “While serving on the Board, Eric had enormous success in helping the Association develop valuable and innovative online and print content in his terms as chair of the Professional Resources Committee. He has also provided outstanding guidance as the chair of our Certification Exploratory Council. We look forward to his leadership of our Finance, Programs, Executive, and Nominating Committees, and the entire Association over the next four years.”

“Eric has made significant contributions to our clients’ understanding of U.S. health law and policy,” said McDermott co-chair Peter J. Sacripanti. “With his great energy, deep knowledge and exceptional experience in the field, he is well placed to lead AHLA forward in ways that will greatly benefit its members and the health care industry as a whole.”

“We’re very proud of Eric for achieving this very impressive endorsement by his peers,” added McDermott co-chair Jeffrey E. Stone. “His selection as AHLA president is a testament to the great work he has done over the years not only for his clients, but also for the health law community generally. We are delighted to support him as he takes on this new role.”

A key component of AHLA’s mission is to serve as a public resource on selected health care legal issues through non-partisan public policy forums and resources, policy-related sessions at in-person conferences, and publications that share the expertise of AHLA members with other health care attorneys, health professionals and executives, public health agencies, pro bono attorneys, and consumer groups.

Zimmerman served in a number of prior leadership roles, including on the AHLA Board from 2008 to 2014, before being elevated to the top position.

Mr. Zimmerman received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University. He earned his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from The George Washington University and Juris Doctor (JD) degree from George Mason University’s School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
