Federal cannabis policy remains a hotly debated topic in Congress. Though normalization efforts have gained momentum, strategies have begun to diverge. Some in Congress seek a lofty approach hinging on full legalization. Others are tackling discrete challenges the cannabis industry faces with incremental legislation. The bill with the greatest momentum right now is the SAFE Banking Act, which would provide protection from federal prosecution for banks doing business with state-legal cannabis businesses. Although introduced in years past, the bill has never advanced as far as it has in the current Congress.
