International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce Frédéric Chevallier has joined its Intellectual Property Practice Group as a partner based in Paris. Frédéric brings extensive experience leading cross-border patent litigation, particularly before several central, local, and regional divisions of the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Frédéric will bolster McDermott’s UPC practice, which is unique among U.S. firms for its coordinated trans-Atlantic strategy. Notably, our strong reputation resulted in a recent recognition by IAM Patent 1000 as a top UPC firm—and McDermott is one of just two U.S. firms on the list.
“Frédéric is a highly respected litigator with a strong track record in high-stakes IP disputes,” said Douglas Carsten, co-head of McDermott’s Global Intellectual Property Practice Group. “His arrival significantly enhances our capabilities in Paris and across Europe, particularly in the life sciences and technology, media, and telecommunications sectors, where our clients face increasingly complex legal and regulatory challenges.”
Frédéric advises leading pharmaceutical innovators and high-tech companies on complex, multi-jurisdictional patent disputes, including matters involving supplementary protection certificates (SPCs), second medical use claims, and standard essential patents. Notably, he represented a major pharmaceutical innovator in the first-ever enforcement campaign against generic manufacturers before the UPC, and he also acted for high-tech companies in revocation and infringement proceedings across multiple UPC divisions.
“We’re excited to welcome Frédéric to our vibrant team,” added Grégoire Andrieux, Managing Partner of McDermott’s Paris office. “His expertise complements the broad range of services we offer and reinforces our commitment to delivering top-tier counsel across key industries.”
Frédéric’s practice also includes trademark and copyright litigation, as well as regulatory transactional work in the life sciences sector. Prior to joining McDermott, he was a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills in Paris, where he led major patent litigation matters for global pharmaceutical and technology companies.
“McDermott’s global platform, deep sector focus, and outstanding reputation in increasingly complex and interconnected markets make it the ideal home—and a powerful foundation—for my practice,” said Frédéric. “I look forward to collaborating with my new colleagues to deliver exceptional results for our clients.”
