International law firm McDermott Will & Schulte is pleased to welcome Karen Butler as a partner in the Transactions Practice Group, based in the Firm’s London office. Karen brings extensive experience advising major financial institutions, asset managers and corporations on complex financial UK and EU financial services regulatory matters.

Karen’s practice focuses on providing strategic counsel on a wide range of financial services law, including the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA), Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive, including applicable regulations in the U.K. as well as rules and regulations concerning corporate governance, conduct, custody, prime brokerage, systems and controls, anti-money laundering (AML), capital requirements (CRD/CRR), and SFDR compliance. Her deep experience in navigating the intricate regulatory landscape governing cross-border transactions and financial products including alternative investment funds, securities financing transactions, and derivatives will be a significant asset to the Firm’s global client base.

Ranked as a leading partner in The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, Karen has a proven track record of guiding clients through regulatory change, licensing, marketing, change in control, and compliance challenges and implementation projects. Her work has spanned matters involving derivatives, fund and asset management, financial and fund promotions, and regulatory capital.
