International law firm McDermott Will & Schulte announced that Steve Knipfelberg has joined the firm as a partner in its Litigation Practice Group in New York. Joining as a member of the industry’s only crypto-exclusive team whose lawyers devote 100% of their time to crypto-related matters, Steve brings deep, hands-on knowledge of the global digital asset and blockchain ecosystem, having most recently served as Deputy General Counsel and Head of Legal for the Americas at OKX, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.
“Steve’s arrival significantly enhances our ability to counsel clients operating at the forefront of digital asset innovation,” said Josh Simon, global head of McDermott’s Litigation Practice Group. “His in-house leadership at OKX gives him rare insight into the legal, regulatory, and commercial challenges facing digital asset businesses today. He will be an invaluable resource for clients navigating enforcement risk, market volatility, and the next generation of financial technology disputes.”
“Steve’s hands-on experience at some of the world’s largest crypto platforms gives our clients the edge they need to get new products to market and win disputes,” said Joseph (Joe) Evans, head of McDermott’s FinTech and Blockchain practice. “Steve is a big get for us – we are pumped he is joining the team.”
Steve advises clients on litigation, regulatory engagement, and strategic legal initiatives on matters involving digital asset trading, market structure, consumer protection, and cross-border enforcement. He helps clients across the digital asset ecosystem navigate complex regulatory frameworks, respond to inquiries from US and international regulators, and manage high-stakes disputes arising in the rapidly evolving crypto markets. Before joining OKX, Steve represented financial institutions and other sophisticated clients in commercial litigation, creditors’ rights matters, and bankruptcy-related disputes at an AmLaw 100 firm.
“I am thrilled to join McDermott at a remarkable time for growth, both in the digital asset industry and for McDermott, following its successful merger,” Steve said. “The firm’s global platform, collaborative culture, and commitment to innovation make it the ideal place to build my practice. I look forward to partnering with my new colleagues to help clients navigate the most complex issues in crypto and fintech.”
His arrival underscores McDermott’s continued investment in its fintech and blockchain capabilities and reflects the firm’s strategic focus on supporting clients in emerging and technology driven industries.
