Concerns Grow that Telephone Consumer Protection Act May Frustrate Patient Engagement Goals



Jennifer Geetter, Matthew Knowles and Amy Pimentel co-authored this bylined article on the impact of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) on telemedicine. The TCPA “was originally passed to curb abusive robocalls, [but it] poses significant compliance challenges for digital health tools that use automated text messages and telephone calls,” the authors wrote, adding that HIPAA-covered entities “cannot simply ignore” TCPA compliance, which “is difficult, even for sophisticated companies.”
