New OIG Guidance Signals Changed View of Compliance Programs

Tony Maida wrote this bylined article on the new criteria used by the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) to evaluate healthcare provider corporate compliance programs. Compared to its approach 20 years ago, Mr. Maida wrote, OIG is now “starting from the premise that everyone in health care has a compliance program and if you do not you pose a higher risk” of non-compliance,” and added: “Now OIG is completing its pivot to its next goal — moving from encouraging the creation of compliance programs to operating effective compliance programs.”
