McDermott Will & Emery, the recognized leader in health law, announced that Carolyn Metnick has joined the Firm’s award-winning health practice as a partner based in the Chicago office.
“Carolyn is well known in the industry for having worked with clients on some of their most sensitive, challenging and complex health data privacy, data breach and security issues. She has also worked to develop privacy and security compliance programs for clients regulated by HIPAA. Carolyn is an outstanding lawyer and a rising star who brings our clients a unique understanding of today’s health information landscape,” said Eric Zimmerman, global head of McDermott’s Health group.
Carolyn’s practice focuses on the security and privacy of health information, HIPAA & HITECH compliance. She works with clients to develop internal policies, procedures and workforce training. In addition, she advises businesses on data breach investigations and notification processes under state and federal laws. Carolyn counsels healthcare providers on business and transactions issues, including mergers and acquisitions, governance issues and joint ventures.

Carolyn has been president of the Illinois Association of Health Lawyers for the past year. Prior to McDermott, Carolyn was co-chair of Privacy, Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies at Akerman LLP.
Carolyn received her LLM from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, her Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from University of Chicago.
Carolyn is the second partner with deep privacy and data security experience to join McDermott in the last month. In October, Laura Jehl joined the Firm’s Regulatory Practice Group as leader of the Global Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice.
