International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Timothy (Tim) Shuman and Alexander (Alex) Clavero have been named to Law360’s “Rising Stars” for their outstanding work in tax and corporate law.
Tim Shuman is the head of McDermott’s US & International Tax Practice and is based in the Washington, DC office. As a leader in one of the world’s largest and most renowned legal tax departments, Tim has built a solid external profile and has achieved the apex of being regularly sought out by companies. His practice focuses on corporate and international tax matters for US and non-US multinationals, with an emphasis on domestic and cross-border acquisitions and restructurings. Tim regularly assists the Firm’s largest global clients with their most intricate and complex matters, and has been at the forefront of leading the Firm’s key clients through optimal tax planning in a constantly changing tax landscape. He is among the leadership team guiding the Firm’s thought leadership on the consequences and opportunities brought about by Tax Reform.
In addition to his proven track record as a tax attorney, Tim is also proficient in the business of law. As leader of the Firm’s US & International Tax practice, he is responsible for developing the strategic direction of the practice, recruiting new talent, and helping steward the Firm’s long-earned reputation as a destination tax firm.
Alex Clavero is a partner in McDermott’s corporate practice group and is based in the Miami office. A stand out from his law firm peers, Alex made partner at 31 after only 6 years as an associate and is the youngest equity partner in the Transactions practice. He focuses his practice on transactional work, with an emphasis on mergers, acquisitions and divestitures involving private equity sponsors and private companies. Alex has handled many complex transactions, including leveraged buyouts, private equity acquisitions and divestitures, corporate carve-outs, debt and equity investments and joint ventures.
As Miami’s hiring partner, Alex is directly involved in hiring racially, ethnically and gender diverse lawyers and works tirelessly to ensure that diversity and inclusion are key considerations in every major hiring decision at the firm. Due to Alex’s leadership, the incoming associate and summer associate classes in the Miami office are over 60% racially diverse. Alex is also a delegate to the firm’s internal diversity summit, where he spearheads initiatives to increase diverse attorney visibility across the firm’s associate and partner ranks.
