Joshua Buchman was among the Chicago office lawyers who for over a decade represented pro bono a Georgia death row inmate because his sentence was too severe. The work was “way outside the experience any of us had had in any other case,” Mr. Buchman (who does about 200 hours of pro bono work a year) said, noting that the crime “was not one of those horrendous situations where there were … elements that would make you think this was a death penalty case.” Jeffrey Stone, Firm co-chair, added that McDermott does not consider the cost of cases “where you stood up for someone who didn’t have the voice, the knowledge, the power to speak for themselves.” Watch the full video.
