Untangling Web of State & Federal Privacy Laws - McDermott Will & Emery

Untangling the Complex Web of State and Federal Privacy Laws

Overview

Since California enacted the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) there’s been a new version of keeping up with the Joneses – and it’s happening in state capitals across the United States. As the federal government takes a back seat to the development of consumer privacy law, states are rushing to fill the gap with a kaleidoscope of different laws, rules and regulations. The result can be a headache-inducing series of potential risks and operational challenges for businesses to assess.

Join members of McDermott Will & Emery’s Global Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice Group for a panel discussion that will help make sense of the changing national privacy landscape and the litany of proposed and newly enacted state privacy laws.

The discussion will include:

  • An overview of new state laws, including the California Privacy Rights Act of 2020 (CPRA), Virginia’s Consumer Data Protection Act (CDPA) and Colorado’s Consumer Privacy Act (CPA)
  • What’s on the horizon regarding pending and proposed state privacy laws
  • Progress toward a federal privacy law and reading the tea leaves for 2022 and beyond
