Jacques Buhart Named New Head of McDermott’s Brussels Office

Overview

BRUSSELS (February 22, 2016) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery announced today that Jacques Buhart has been named the new head of its office in Brussels. Mr. Buhart will replace Philip Bentley who is staying with the Firm, and will remain instrumental in further development of the European Competition practice.

Paris and Brussels-qualified, Mr. Buhart handles competition cases out of both McDermott offices, concentrating on EU competition rules and mergers and acquisitions. He has over 15 years of experience in handling a broad range of complex competition matters and litigations in the European Courts. Further to his strong antitrust credentials, he is also very active in the area of mergers and acquisitions as well as litigations and cartel investigations, acting for such clients as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Mr. Buhart received his legal education from the Sorbonne, Paris, the Hague Academy of International Law, the Institute of Comparative Law, Paris, and the University of Paris, DESS. He also read for an MBA from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris (ESCP) and has been a visiting professor of EU competition law at the University of Aix-en-Provence and at the University of Tokyo. He is a member of the board of the Sorbonne Law School and a published author on EU competition and M&A topics.

“We want to thank Philip for his tremendous contribution in shaping our Brussels practice over the past 7 years,” said McDermott co-chair Peter Sacripanti. “His steady leadership and deep experience of the competition market in Europe helped us develop a strong and respected European practice.”

“We would like to congratulate Jacques on his expanded new role,” said Ray Jacobsen, global head of McDermott’s Antitrust/Competition Practice Group. “The Firm is focused on building a vibrant competition practice in Europe and our Brussels office is instrumental in driving this strategy forward. We believe that Jacques’ energy, coupled with his extensive knowledge of European competition issues, will further spearhead the dynamic growth of our antitrust capabilities across the continent.”
