McDermott Comment | Five Ideas That Might Actually Boost UK Growth – Infrastructure & Net Zero

Overview

Shah Jahan Khandokar, partner at law firm McDermott Will & Emery, said:

“Creating an independent body could result in the sometimes competing policies of The Treasury and BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) being market/stress tested before the relevant projects are procured. This should, in theory at least, mitigate risks which result in delay, which would save the taxpayer millions of pounds every year.

Net Zero absolutely needs to be treated as an opportunity to improve not only growth but also productivity. As a country, we need to focus on output; pumping cash into our R&D sector will help achieve this, as will a renewed focus on Net Zero assets which incentivises investment without the taxpayer paying for this.”
