McDermott Launches Unified Patent Court Resource Center

Overview

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery launched its new online Unified Patent Court Resource Center in preparation for the official installment of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and the European patent with unitary effect (Unitary Patent). The UPC will launch on June 1, 2023, and will transform patent enforcement in Europe.

“The UPC brings a fresh look at global patents under review in a new court system, creating many new risks, incentives and opportunities for clients and their businesses. Our team is prepared to help those looking for guidance and action,” said Chuck Larsen, Boston-based partner in McDermott’s intellectual property (IP) practice. As a US lawyer and English solicitor, Chuck is licensed to practice before the European Patent Office and the courts of England and Wales.

The Resource Center is a one-stop location for thought leadership and insights that explain the timeline of the UPC launch and relevant corporate action items. It also addresses future conversations regarding changes to the law, precedent-setting litigation that comes before the court and information on how this court will shape the global patent landscape.

“This is the start of revolutionary change within the European Union, and I am excited for the possibility of a new wave of patent evolution,” said Hon.-Prof. Dr. Henrik Holzapfel, Düsseldorf-based IP partner. “Our IP lawyers develop robust cross-border strategies specific to our clients, whether they are looking to file infringement or revocation actions in the UPC, as well as advising our clients on the impact of the UPC system on license and R&D agreements. Our team is also well-versed in the process of filing and obtaining unitary patents.”
