International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that partner William (Bill) Gaede has been named General Patent Litigator of the Year – California as part of the LMG Life Sciences Awards 2023. The Firm was also honored within the Patent Impact Case of the Year – United States category for its lead role in Natera v ArcherDX, Inc.
Bill is head of McDermott’s Global Intellectual Property Practice Group and focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation in the life sciences and medical device industries. He serves as lead counsel for a wide range of companies and research institutes and has extensive experience in litigating life science technologies such as antibodies, proteins, small molecules and diagnostics. In addition to his jury trial experience, Bill has argued before the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Separately, a McDermott Intellectual Property Litigation team that won a $19M jury trial verdict in favor of Natera Inc. for patented diagnostic methods to detect and monitor cancer was recognized as a Patent Impact Case of the Year. The team was led by partners Bill Gaede, Bhanu Sadasivan, Sarah Columbia and Mandy Kim.
Finally, three additional McDermott IP lawyers were shortlisted in the following award categories:

- Sarah Chapin Columbia, General Patent Litigator of the Year – New England
- Judy Mohr, Patent Strategy Attorney of the Year – California
The LMG Life Sciences Awards, now in its eleventh year, are presented to firms, individuals and corporations behind the most innovative and challenging legal work across life sciences industries from the past year, as well as those driving the international market.
