McDermott Welcomes New Data Protection Partner in Paris

Overview

PARIS (July 5, 2017) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to welcome Romain Perray as partner in its Paris office. Romain’s arrival will strengthen the Firm’s global Data Privacy and Cybersecurity capabilities throughout its offices in the US, UK and Continental Europe.

Romain has extensive experience in data privacy and data protection law, and lectures on these subjects in Master of Law classes at the University of Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne, the University of Paris-II Panthéon-Assas and the University of Paris V Descartes. He advises on the full range of data protection and data security for clients in life sciences, automotive, e-commerce, leisure, social networks and even the public sector, especially in the context of smart cities projects.

His expertise extends to cross-border transfers of data, joint data controllers and/or data processor agreements, the formulation of privacy and or cookies policies, and the use of personal data for marketing purposes, including through profiling techniques, notably in a Big Data context. Romain has also conducted numerous international data protection audits in order to ensure compliance with both EU and domestic data protection requirements, more specifically those resulting from the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which becomes applicable from May 25, 2018.

Mr. Perray is also a regular contributor to leading legal publications such as LexisNexis and Lamy Editions for which he is the author of two significant manuals on, respectively, data protection and video monitoring issues.

“We are excited about this new addition to our team”, said Jacques Buhart, head of McDermott’s Paris and Brussels practices. “We have been steadily growing our French and pan-European capabilities, and the addition of a data protection practitioner of Romain’s calibre will help further strengthen our local and international offering in response to our clients’ needs. With the General Data Protection Regulation looming on the horizon, we believe we are well placed to provide our clients with timely, relevant and global advice, effectively guiding them through this significant change in the business environment they operate in,” he added.

Romain will be joined by associate Julie Uzan-Naulin, who focuses her practice on digital and data protection law.

McDermott’s highly ranked Global Data Privacy and Cybersecurity practice comprises over 25 preeminent lawyers across the Firm’s global platform, who regularly advise clients on the statutory, regulatory and enforcement regimes that govern the use of data around the world, including in the US, the EU, and Asia. Recent additions to the team include such seasoned professionals as Daniel Gottlieb in the Firm’s Chicago office and Los Angeles-based noted cybersecurity litigator Michael Morgan.
