ABA 2024 Midyear Tax Meeting

Overview

Katy Crafton Fluet, Erin Fraser and Allison Wilkerson were speakers at the American Bar Association (ABA) 2024 Midyear Tax Meeting in San Francisco, California. The annual event brings together attorneys and government officials to discuss the latest federal, state and local tax policies through a wide variety of in-depth programs.

Katy and Erin presented on the session, “No Exemption Left Behind,” which discussed discrepancies between the estate/gift tax exemption and the generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax exemption and planning options that take these discrepancies into account so that no exemption is wasted.

Allison presented on the session, “Employee Benefits ESOP Update,” which reviewed employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) sustainability alternatives being considered by “mature” ESOPs that are looking to ensure ongoing benefits for current and future participants. The panel discussed recent case law filed by private plaintiffs raising concern about “releveraging” practices and considerations for anticipated regulatory updates.
