Privacy Legislative Look Back and Look Ahead

Overview

2022 has been a busy legislative year for privacy. Dozens of states considered consumer privacy bills, two states enacted privacy consumer bills and California released proposed California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) regulations. At the federal level, a bipartisan, bicameral bill called the American Data Privacy Protection Act (ADPPA) has made it farther in Congress than any other federal privacy bill. None of that is to mention the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) proposed privacy rulemaking, the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) proposed rules around cybersecurity, bills to amend the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and more.

Join David Saunders and Scott Cowperthwait, Vice President, Law – Privacy and Cybersecurity of Charter Communications, as they look back at the legislative year and what it might mean for the future of privacy legislation.

Discussion topics will include:

  • A look back at state legislative action on privacy, including new consumer privacy laws and Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) copycats
  • What we can expect at the federal level
  • A look ahead to what we might expect at the state level in 2023 and which states might be next to enact comprehensive privacy laws
